    Security Doors FAQs

    There are two types of security doors. The first is a door typically made of metal that includes more than one locking point. The second and more common type of security door is security screen door that is installed in front of an existing door.

     

    To be pass the test of being called a security door, there is a certain standard that must be met. This is known as the Australian Standards (AS). Here are the specific standards:

    AS 5039: Security screen doors and security window grilles

    AS 5040: Installation of security screen doors and window grilles

    AS 5041: Methods of test - Security screen doors and window grilles

     

    These tests include:

    • Dynamic Impact Test
    • Jemmy Test
    • Pull Test
    • Probe Test
    • Shear Test
    • Knife Shear Test

     

    Make sure that if you are purchasing a security door, that it at least meets these minimum requirements.

    It depends on where you live and what type of security door you want.

     

    A steel door replacement may cost you anywhere between $540 (Seattle, WA) to $892 (New York, NY)

     

    A security screen door can cost between $600 on the low end and $4,500 on the high end. A typical front-door security door may cost around $2000 which would include professional installation.

    There are many factors to consider when choosing a security door such as the level of security you want, who will install it and how much are you willing to spend for your security.

    Here are some things to consider:

    1. Off-the-Shelf vs. Custom Made
    Many big box stores sell security doors, but its a 'one size fits all' type of door. A truly secure door is custom fit to your door opening.

    2. Multi-Point Locking System
    A single dead bolt is good, but a multiple locking system is better. Look for a security door solution that has a 3-point locking system to improve the security of your door.

    3. Reinforced Strike Plates
    A deadbolt is only as good as the strike plate that receives it. If the strike plate uses short screws or the frame that the strike plate is attached to is thin or in poor condition, its not difficult to kick in a door.

    A good security door includes its own solid frame which increases the security level.

    4. Proper Fasteners
    There are two things to consider when it comes to how a security door is fastened. First, the fasteners should be concealed once installed, that way burglars can't access them.
    Second, not only how many fasteners are used, but longer fasteners are better. At a minimum, a 3" screw should be used. In some circumstances, a 4" or even 5" screw is preferred.
